John Henry Schulte
John Henry Schulte died at his home in Clayton township on Monday evening, April 22nd, 1912, at 9:30 o’clock after having been in feeble health for the past three years, aged 72 years, 11 months and 21 days.
Mr. Schulte was born in Oldenburg, Germany, on May 1st, 1839, came with his parents and one sister to this country in 1844, landing in Baltimore, Md., from where they went to Ohio, and in the spring of 1845 to Guttenberg, where they remained about six months. In the fall of 1845 the family settled on a farm in Clayton township, his father passing away in 1854, his mother in 1885 and his sister in 1863.
On December 11th, 1862 he was united in marriage with Justina Otting and to this union five sons and three daughters were born, all of whom are living; H. H. Schulte, of Manly; G. H. Schulte of Elkader; J. F. Schulte of Manly; F. W. Schulte of Worth county; J. A. Schulte of Lindsay Cal.; and Mrs. F. G. Bierbaum on the farm with her parents; Mrs. Lester V. Denman of Hudson, Wyo.; and Miss Louise Schulte, who is teaching in the high school at Heber, Utah.
Mr. Schulte leaves, beside the above named sons and daughters, his companion through life, with whom he would have celebrated the Golden Wedding anniversary had he lived until Dec. 11th of this year, also twelve grandchildren and many neighbors and friends to mourn his decease.
He was a kind and loving husband and father, a member of the Lutheran church, was held in the highest esteem by those whose knew him, and has at various times served as a member of the school board and as trustee of Clayton township, where he has continuously lived on his farm for 67 years.
Funeral services will be held from the house at one o’clock p.m. on Sunday, April 28th, and the remain taken to Garnavillo, where services will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran church, Rev. K.W. Braun officiating. Interment in the Garnavillo cemetery.
