McGregor, Ia., Nov. 24 - Funeral services for Mrs. James Davies, aged 76 years, were held Saturday afternoon, Nov. 22, at the McGregor Methodist church, Rev. F.H. Schepple officiating.
Mrs. Davies, nee Mary Elizabeth Moore, was born Sept. 23, 1854, at Buncombe, Dubuque county, Iowa. During childhood she moved with her parents to McGregor. On Oct. 7, 1876, she was married to James Davies at Prairie du Chien, Wis. They made their home in McGregor for some years, later moving to the farm home six miles west of town.
Mrs. James Davies was a direct descendent of two generals of the Revolutionary war. Her two great grandfathers, General Stirling and Joseph Warren, were members of George Washington's staff, while General Warner, another member of George Washington's staff, was an uncle of her great grandmother. A history which was one of the prized possessions of Mrs. Davies reveals that her great grandfather, Joseph Warren "gave his life to the cause of the Revolution, being killed in action June 17, 1775." Her other great grandfather, General Stirling, served throughout the war. Mrs. Davies' mother, Phoebe Henderson Moore, was first cousin to President James K. Polk.
Mrs. Davies not only found pride in the achievements of her ancestors; two of her sons, Frank and George, served their country during the World war, as did also numerous nephews.
Immediate surviving relatives of Mrs. Davies are her husband, James Davies, and ten children, Alfred, Mary and Frank, who live on the home farm; Adam, McGregor; John, Prairie du Chien; Clyde, Dubuque; Mrs. John Sawvell, Prairie du Chien; George, Spokane, Wash.; Mrs. Verne Washburn, Marquette and Mrs. Jay Anderson, McGregor.
