Funeral services for Alvin John Dettman, 99 of Monona, were held Monday, March 17, 2003, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona. Rev. Allen Bidne officiated. Burial was at the Monona City Cemetery, Monona. Casket bearers were Christina Wallerstedt, Ryan Collins, Jamie Collins, Jennifer Collins, Derek Dettmann, Stacy Dettmann, Doug Zittergruen, Paul Zittergruen, Jamie Kupcis, Joe Olney, Steve Olney, Justin Miller and Kathleen Miller. Leonard Funeral Home, Monona, was in charge of arrangements.
He was born September 7, 1903 near National, Iowa, in Farmersburg township, the eighth of nine children born to Julius and Alvina (Hamann) Dettmann. He was baptized at National, and confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Garnavillo on April 1, 1917. He attended Pioneer Country School through the sixth grade.
He was united in Marriage to Selma Kregel on September 17, 1924, at the bride’s home in Garnavillo. They then moved to a farm southwest of Monona. Alvin was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona, where he served on the church council and was an usher for many years. He was a director of the Evergreen Grove Country School. He lived on his farm until October of 1987, at which time he moved to an apartment in Monona. He continued to live there until October of 1993, when his health failed.
At this time he was admitted to the Elkader Care Center, where he resided until he suffered a major stroke on March 11, 2003. He enjoyed playing bingo, cards and participating in all other events at the care center. In his younger years, he enjoyed fishing, squirrel and pheasant hunting and playing cards.
Survivors include his son, Julius (Joyce) Dettmann, Monona; a son-in-law Carlton (Shirley) Collins, Postville; his five grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Lois Dettmann, Elkader and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Selma, on March 3, 1983; his parents; two daughters, Jeanne Collins and Joyce Collins; his brothers and sisters, Rosie Bente, John Dettmann, Leona Mueller, Melvina Hempler, Hilda Marting, Edwin Dettmann and Caroline and Otto Dettmann in infancy; and a son-in-law, Eugene Collins.
