Fredriech Carl Pahlas
Despite the rain and disagreeable weather, the funeral of the late Fred Pahlas was largely attended. Services were held at the house with Rev. G. W. Baxter, of the Congregational church and Rev. G. F. Braun, of Farmersburg, officiating, and at the church at Clayton Centre, Rev. F. W. Seifert, a life-long friend, officiated. He is buried in the Clayton Centre cemetery.
The life story of the deceased is as follows: He was born in Germany in 1822, and was in his 81st year at the time of his demise. He resided in his native land until he was 30 years of age, when he came to the United States, landing at New York. He then went to Carbon county, Pa., where he worked five years in the coal industries. In 1857 he came to Clayton county, owning and operating a large farm in Read twp. In 1889 he retired from the farm and came to Elkader.
In 1852 Mr. Pahlas was united in marriage with Amelia Scholse. To them were born seven children, two only surviving, Henry C. of Elkader, and Mrs. John Miller of Clayton Township. Mrs. Pahlas died a few years ago.
Deceased was an industrious, honorable man, who by his uprightness of purpose, thrift and industry, had gained a competence that in his old age he could enjoy. He was always been a consistent member of the Lutheran church.
