Amelie Elisabeth Marie Pahlas

At her home in Elkader, on the morning of October 12th, 1899, occurred the death of Mrs. Emelie Pahlas, wife of Fred Pahlas. Emelie Scholse was born in Dreborn, Prussia, in the year 1829 and was married to Fred Pahlas in the year 1852 and in the same year emigrated to the United States and settled in Pennsylvania.

In 1857 they became residents of Farmersburg township, in this county and have for several years past been residents of Elkader. Her sickness was of only a few days’ duration, and the sudden demise was a severe shock to her family and friends.

Of the seven children born to this union, two only are living, H.C. Pahlas, of Elkader and Mrs. J.H. Mueller, of Garnavillo. Mrs. Pahlas was beloved by her family and kin, and esteemed by her neighbors and acquaintances, for her many good qualities and kindly nature. A large number of friends of the family gathered at the home on Sunday morning to participate in the short service held there by Rev. A. B. Fickle.

The funeral service proper was conducted at the Lutheran church at Clayton Centre by Rev. F. W. Seifert where very many of the old friends and new, gathered to join in the last rites that the living can offer to the dead. Burial in the Church cemetery nearby.

Elkader Register, Thur., 19 Oct. 1899.

At the family residence in this place, on Thursday morning, Oct. 12, 1899, after a short illness of only four days, occurred the death of Mrs. Fred Pahlas.

Emelie Schultz was born in Dreborn, Prussia, in the year 1829, and was united in marriage to Fred Pahlas in 1852. During that year they emigrated to America and located in Pennsylvania where they remained until 1857. In that year they came to Clayton county and settled on a farm in Farmersburg township where they resided until a few ears ago when they came to Elkader. Seven children were born to them, two only surviving, H. C. of this place, and Mrs. J. H. Mueller of Garnavillo.

Her sudden demise has been a great blow to her aged companion with whom she has lived, toiled and comforted in their mutual sorrow for forty-nine years, and also to her children, grandchildren and neighbors who loved and esteemed her for her great worth. She will be mourned and missed by a large circle of friends.

The funeral was held Sunday morning, Rev. A. B. Fickle officiating at a short service at the house, the regular funeral services being held at Clayton Center, Rev. F. W. Seifert officiating. Her remains were deposited in the cemetery at Clayton Center beside those of her children and many friends. We deeply sympathize with the sorrowing family.
