Contributor: Connie Ellis (Owen Family Researcher)Funeral services for Mrs. Willis Evans, age 78, were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Schultz Funeral home with Rev. D. R. Corrick officiating. Burial was in the City Cemetery. Mrs. Evans died Wednesday night, February 8, 1950 at 8 o'clock in her home from a heart attack. She had been suffering from a heart ailment for the last two years.
As Grace W. Cassaday, she was born the daughter of Warren G. and Elizabeth (Monroe) Cassaday on January 30, 1872 at Oswego, Kansas. Her parents moved to Monona, Iowa when she was 3 and a half years old. She attended the Monona Public Schools and the University of Iowa. She taught school at Volney and Hardin and in other Allamakee County rural schools.
She was married November 23, 1893 to Willis Seymore Evans at Monona. They made their first home at Hardin and then moved to Monona. They then moved to Ladysmith, Wisconsin where they lived for 13 years, returning to Monona in 1927. Grace was a member of the Methodist Church and its Women's Society and the Women's Relief Corps.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis, who died December 10, 1939 and by a son, Harold Henry Evans, who died May 30, 1944.
She is survived by one daughter, Florence Elizabeth, Mrs. Henry J. Schroeder of Monona; two sons, Wilbert Evans of Clinton, Iowa and George Evans of St. Paul, Minnesota; two sisters, Mrs. H. J. Waalk of Monona, and Mrs. Mary Beeler of Long Beach, California; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Music at the services were provided by a quartet composed of Mrs. Ben Frese, Mrs. George Martin, E. G. Kaiser, and K. W. Rash. They sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Going Down the Valley One by One." Mrs. K. W. Rash was the piano accompanist. Pallbearers were: Charles English, Burt Wagner, Clark Riedesel, Art Mohrman, Harlan Seybert, and Elmer Frommelt.
Those from a distance attending the funeral services were: Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Evans and Willard and Henry of Clinton, George W. Evans of St.Paul, Minnesota; Mrs. Earl A. Johnson of LaCrosse, Wisconsin, and Mr.and Mrs. Robert Schviek of Calmar, Iowa.
