John Frederick Dettmann
Funeral services for John Frederick August Dettmann were held Monday, March 25, 1985, 10 a.m., St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Monona, with Pastor Harold O. Ward officiating. Pallbearers were Larry Kurth, Pedar Clemens, John Tieden, David Schlueter, Jim Olson, Brian Dettmann, Lloyd Drahn, and David Schrader. Burial was in the church cemetery.
John Frederick August Dettman was born November 25, 1890, at the farm home, National, Iowa, the son of Julius and Alvina (Hamann) Dettmann. He was baptized and confirmed at National by Rev. Zanzig, and received his education of the rural school at National. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Monona, having served on the church council. He also served on the Commission Company and Creamery Boards.
On November 29, 1916, he was united in marriage to Anna Borcherding at her parents’ home. He was a farmer all his life, being one of the first farmers tin stall terraces on his land.. He died Thursday, March 21, 1985, at the Central Community Hospital, Elkader, after being in ill health the past few years.
He is survived by two sons, Myron and Lorin, both of Monona, two daughters, Gladys Bierbaum of West Des Moines and Helen Schlueter, Fredericksburg, Texas, 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren, two brothers, Alvin of Monona, Edwin of Farmersburg and one sister, Mrs. August (Alvina) Hempeler, Garnavillo.
