Until 1915 they lived on their farm near Garnavillo where their son Walter is now living. Is that year they moved to Garnavillo which has since been their home. For 12 years Mr. Dettmann was assessor for Garnavillo township. He served on the district school board, on the town council and a director of the Farmer’s State Bank when it was first organized. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran church and for a number of years served on the church council.
