Dettmann, Julius 1862-1944

Funeral services for Julius Dettman, 82 who died at his home here last Friday due to infirmities of old age, were held at St. John’s Lutheran church Monday afternoon. The Rev. H.M. Adix conducted the services. Burial was in the cemetery in National.

Julius Dettman, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Dettman, was born Jan. 9, 1862 near Garnavillo, His youth and manhood was spent in the Garnavillo vicinity and March 29, 1887 he was married to Miss Alvina Hamann. The couple moved to a farm north of National where they lived until 1929, when they retired to Farmersburg. Mr. Dettmann enjoyed good health throughout most of his life. However, in the fall of 1942 he fell and suffered a slight hip fracture. After spending some time in their home, he and his wife went to live with their daughter, Mrs. Leone Mueller, and later with another daughter, Mrs. Hilda Marting. Last fall they moved back to Farmersburg, Mr. and Mrs. L.K. Mueller moving with them to care for them. The last month Mr. Dettman showed signs of ailing health but was confined to his bed for only seven days.

Besides his wife, Mr. Dettman is survived by the following children: Mrs. Rose Bente of Elkader, John Dettmann of Monona, Mrs. Leone Mueller of Farmersburg, Mrs. Melvina Hempeler of Garnavillo, Mrs. Hilda Marting of Farmersburg, Alvin Dettman of Monona and Edwin Dettman living on the home place near National. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren, three of them serving in the armed forces, four great-grandchildren; one brother, Henry Dettman of Garnavillo. Two children, two brothers and one sister preceded him in death.

Mr. Dettman was a charter member of St, Peter’s Lutheran church in National and a member of St. John’s Lutheran church in Farmersburg since 1933. For a number of years he was also a member of the Brotherhood of this church.
