Obituary

Sophia Christine Caroline Dettmann nee Marks, was born Jan. 15th 1821 in Carow, Pomerania, Kingdom of Prussia. At the age of six years she experienced a sad bereavement in the death of her mother.

On Nov. 4th 1845, she was married to John Frederick Wilhelm Dettmann. Together they immigrated to America in 1856. After a five weeks stay in the east they came to Garnavillo twp., and bought and lived on the farm on which their son Charles now resides.

In 1872 they moved on a farm in Clayton twp., which has since been their home. They enjoyed good health and prosperity and on Nov. 4th 1895, had the rare opportunity of celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. As the years passed on old age brought on a general debility and finally on Sept 9th at one o’clock p.m. the spirit of the wary pilgrim took its flight, deceased having reached the age of 84 years 8 months and 4 days.

The funeral services were held Thursday afternoon in St. Paul’s Lutheran church and were largely attended. Burial took place in the new cemetery, Rev. Braun, officiating.

Deceased was a woman of good integrity, was a devoted wife, mother and friend, and her memory will ever be cherished in the hearts of her loved ones. She leaves to mourn her aged husband, a half-brother, M. Marks residing in Farmersburg twp., a daughter, Mrs. Augustine Otting, in LeSeur, Minn., three sons, Charles living near Garnavillo, Julius, in Farmersburg twp. and Henry at home. Three children preceded the mother in death. Twenty –five grandchildren and seven great grand-children survive.
