Obituary

John Frederick William Dettmann was born Feb. 27th, 1827 in New Kirchen, Province of Pommerania.

Nov. 4th, 1845, he was married to Sophia Christina Caroline Marks. Seven children were born to this union of which four are still living.

In 1856 the family emigrated to the United States and settled in Garnavillo township on a farm now in possession of Mr. Karl Dettmann.

In 1895 the old folks celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. His wife reached the age of 84 years, 8 months and 4 days. His departure is mourned by three sons, a daughter, twenty-six grand-children and ten great grand-children.

The children are Mrs. Augustine Otting of LaSuer, Minn.; Karl of Garnavillo township; Julius, of Farmersburg township, and Henry, who was staying at home. Besides those named he leaves a brother-in-law, Wm. Marks of Monona.

His health was always good until about five years ago, when he took very wick with pneumonia. Three years ago he broke his right leg, which caused him considerable pain, but he got over that all right. He was taken sick again with lung fever and after about a week he died, April 11th, at 8:00 o’clock in the evening. He was a very diligent and industrious man, who worked himself up from great poverty to prosperity and comfort. His wife, with whom he had been very happy, died Sept. 19th, 1905. He was an affectionate father, a true neighbor and friend. He received the best of care by his son Henry, and the grand-children and other relatives did all they could to make the last days and hours as comfortable as possible. He reached the age of 82 years, 2 months and four days.
