John Henry Mueller was the son of Louis Mueller and Dorothea Palas. He was born in Jefferson township, Clayton county, Iowa, Nov. 18, 1860. He received his education in one of the schools in Farmersburg township and grew up on the farm of his father.

In the year 1885, Nov. 19, he was married to Sarah Pahlas and the two began housekeeping on a farm of Mr. Mueller’s father in Clayton township, where they lived for about thirty years. About a year and a half they lived in California and traveled in that state as well as in other parts of the United States for health. Three years ago they bought a lot on Main Str., in Monona and moved into the home which they had built on it.

About nineteen years ago Mr. Mueller contracted heart trouble by over exertion at a barn fire on his farm. Medical advice and treatment gave relief but did not bring about a cure. Almost five years ago he was compelled by failing heath to retire from active farm work. He sought health by traveling and in an extended stay in California. This winter a slight attack of bronchitis affected the heart also and he sought relief in one of the hospitals in Postville as it appeared, not in vain. Monday, Feb. 9th, he felt exceptionally well all day, but about six p.m. he suddenly lost consciousness and a little later he had departed from this life without warning.

Mr. Mueller was a member of the Lutheran church, first by baptism, then by religious instruction and confirmation. He was in regular attendance at divine services and Holy Communion, also; if possible, present in the business meetings of our congregations, in short, a member of our church in good standing. He was one of the leaders in the struggle for the establishment of the Farmer’s State Bank in Monona and was its first president.

He has made many friends, and but few, if any, enemies. All who knew him more intimately will miss him many times. We hope all this is the result of his heart’s relation to Christ, the Savior and therefore has now gone to his reward.

Those left to mourn his departure are: Mrs. Mueller, two sons, John of Shreveport, Louisiana; Lloyd of Clayton township; one daughter (Mrs. Rev Braun) of Garnavillo and four grandchildren.

One brother, Louis of Farmersburg township, four sisters, Mrs. Julius Tuecke, Mrs. George Pahlas, Mrs. Aug. Hempeler, all of Garnavillo and Mrs. Frank Turner of Fonda, Iowa. Two of his brothers died in their early childhood and one, Henry about five years ago at the age of forty-five years.
