Elkader- Funeral services for Clayton county's most well-known and best loved school teacher, Miss Mary Margaret Mitchell, will be held at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at McTaggart Funeral Home at Elkader and at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church at Garber.
Rosary will be recited at McTaggart's at 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.
Miss Mitchell, 78, taught for 54 years, all but two of them in Clayton county. She died at midnight Sunday at Riverview Hospital in Guttenberg.
She moved to Clayton county with her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Mitchell, in 1877 when she was a year old. They settled near Elkport and that vicinity has always been her home.
She began teaching in the rural schools of Clayton county in 1895, at the age of 19.
In 1945 she was given recognition as the oldest person in her profession in the Midwest. She retired in 1948. Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Robert J. Saunders. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery. There are no immediate survivors.
