A dispatch just as we go to press announces the death of Wm. F. Huntting of McGregor, one of the best know produce dealers of the west.

Added by Reid Johnson in Feb. 2023:

Elkader Register, Thur., 05 May 1892.

Wm. F. Huntting, president of the Huntting Elevator company, of McGregor, died suddenly in that city Thursday morning of heart disease. Mr. Huntting had recently returned from the south where he had bought a Kentucky saddle horse, with which he was wont to take an occasional outing. On Thursday morning he took a brisk ride, and after leaving his horse at the stable, walked down to his office at a lively gait. In passing the store of a friend he stopped to talk a moment and complained of a sharp pain in the region of the heart. Arriving at the office he sat down to work at his desk, and a few minutes later fell forward in a fainting condition. In an instant his son was at his side, but the end had come, the father breathing his last without uttering a word.

Wm. F. Huntting has for many years been one of the most prominent grain operators in the northwest. He was born in Southampton, L.I., in 1828 and settled in McGregor in 1857. For many years he was a member of the firm Bassett, Huntting & Co., and was closely connected with the Diamond Jo Reynolds in a number of Business enterprises. When the Huntting Elevator company was organized in 1891, the deceased became its president and continued in that capacity until his death. This concern controlled about 150 elevators scattered throughout Iowa, Minnesota and the Dakotas, and its operations were conducted on a large scale.

Mr. Huntting's wealth has of late been estimated at $500,000, and it is thought that his life insurance policies are in excess of $50,000 and may reach $75,000. His death will be a distinct loss to the business interests of McGregor, with which he was so prominently connected and to foster which he contributed his time and means most liberally.

Four sons, the youngest (15 or 16) years old, all residents of McGregor, a daughter at school, and two daughters, married, and residing at Minneapolis, Minn., and Joliet, Ill., are the surviving children of Mr. Huntting. It is likely that the remains will be conveyed to the birthplace of the deceased in Long Island for interment.
