Guttenberg, Ia., Oct. 25 - William E. Duwe, 87, pioneer resident of Clayton county, died at the hospital here Thursday morning. The body was transferred to a local mortuary where it remained until Saturday, when it was taken to Clayton for burial. The funeral services were held at the Lutheran church, Clayton, Saturday afternoon, Rev. G. Bunge, pastor of St. Peter's Lutheran church at Garnavillo officiating.
The body was laid to rest in the Clayton cemetery. The funeral services were largely attended by relatives and friends.
Mr. Duwe was born in Hanover, Germany, on March 28, 1843, coming to America with his parents, who settled on a farm in Clayton county. On July 3, 1863, he was married to Mary Ann Osterdock, who preceded him in death several years ago.
Five children were born, George L., Amelia L., Anna M., William H., and Elizabeth E., al of whom preceded their father in death.
Many years ago Mr. Duwe was a resident of Guttenberg, having been successfully engaged in business here. In 1873 he moved to Clayton, where he lived until two months ago. Mr. Duwe was a man of sterling qualities and had a host of friends in northeast Iowa.
He is survived by several grandchildren. Mr. Duwe was the father-in-law of Ed Crawford of Dubuque.
