Dyersville- Austin Mitchell Gerner, 9, formerly of Guttenberg, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, in an auto accident on I-94 in Gurnee, Ill. Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, St. Mary's Catholic Church, Guttenberg. Burial: Mount Olivet Cemetery, Guttenberg. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Survivors include his mother, Cynthia Gerner, and his father figure, Jason Offerman, of Dyersville. Other survivors include family members of Guttenberg and Dyersville: grandfather, Dave Gerner and wife Julie; aunt Sam Gerner; grandpa, Fran Diesch; maternal great-grandmother, Florence Eilers; paternal great-grandmother, Rita Gerner; great-grandma, Dot Diesch; great-aunt Ruthie Ratterman; the Offerman family; and other special family, including Mary Jo Diesch and Julie Diesch.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, uncle, great-grandfather, two great-uncles and a great-aunt. his grandmother, Susan Diesch, and uncle, Travis Bolsinger, died in the same accident.

Austin was born June 19, 1991, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Cynthia Gerner. Austin attended Xavier Grade School since moving to Dyersville from Guttenberg in July 1999. He actively and enthusiastically participated in sports activities. He played Little League baseball for the A's in Dyersville and for the Racomm Credit Union soccer team. Austin loved to watch wrestling and enjoyed playing Play Station games in his free time away from sports and school.

His loving and outgoing personality made him many friends who are left to honor his memory.
