Melvin C. Peterson, 81, of 2440 Second Ave., died Wednesday at his home following a long illness.

A resident of Marion for 13 years, he was born Dec. 5, 1899. He was married to Isabelle Engelhardt on March 5, 1924; she died March 9, 1934. On Dec. 9, 1944, at Caledonia, Minn., he was married to Selma Johnson. Mr. Peterson attended Iowa State University. He farmed in the Postville area and was associated with IMTA Insurance Company for 10 years before retiring in 1968. He was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church, Marion, and Brotherly Love Lodge No. 204, A.F. & A.M., Postville.

Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Ivan V. of Albuquerque, N.M., and Donald F. of Oelwein; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Ray Weig of Strawberry Point, Mrs. Evelyn Cunningham of Palms, Calif., and Mrs. Rose Yanda of Marion; one stepson, Kenneth Hines of Marion; one brother, Orville of St. Olaf; 26 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Ascension Lutheran Church, Marion, by the Rev. Alan Schultz. Burial and graveside services: 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Norway Lutheran Cemetery, St. Olaf. Friends may call at the Murdoch Funeral Home, Marion, after 2 p.m. Friday and at the church after 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
