Clayton County Register, Thur., 20 Dec. 1934. Monona column.
Frank H. Howard, one of Monona's pioneer and most loved residents, died Thursday afternoon at St. Mary's hospital in Minneapolis, having submitted to an operation a week before. Seldom does a town and vicinity have a man who for over fifty years serves the people and becomes as dear to all as Mr. Howard. To meet him was to meet a man with a smile and cheery word and the Howard store was a welcome place for all to gather.
Mr. Howard was born at Sextonville, Wis., February 9, 1852, and was 82 years old at the time of his death. April 16, 1875, he was married to Miss Julia Cortis, and into their home came a daughter, Hazel, who has been their comfort and pride throughout the years.
He was a member of Clayton Lodge No. 70, A.F. & A.M., and of Northern Light Lodge, I.O.O.F., served on the school board, city council, and was a director of the Monona State Bank. His honesty and straightforwardness made him a valuable member of these organizations.
Surviving Mr. Howard are his widow, Mrs. Julia Howard; one daughter, Hazel, Mrs. J. D. Frazier, of Minneapolis and five grandchildren, Elizabeth Howard Frazier, Jean Dorothy, Julia Mae, Raymond and Frank Howard Frazier, all of Minneapolis. One sister, Mrs. Mae Stewart, of Superior, Wis., and two brothers,, Melvin Howard, of Cameron, Wis., and Everette Howard, of Riverside, Calif.
Funeral services were held at three o'clock Sunday afternoon from the Schultz funeral home, by the Rev. Louis H. Joslin, assisted by the Rev. G. T. Vieth, and burial was made in the Monona city cemetery.
