On Wednesday, Oct. 25th, occurred the death of A.L. Barthel at his home east of town. Mr. Barthel had been in poor health for some time past but it was not in his nature to give up and it was only during the last two weeks that he was bedfast.

Alfred L. Barthel was born Feb. 12th, 1863, near Goshen, Ind., where he spent his youth. He graduated from Valparaiso College in June, 1892, and in August of that year he came to Elkader to take charge of the Grammar Department of our schools and continued in that capacity for eleven years. After his retirement from school work he purchased a farm just east of town and has since devoted all his energy to improving this place and providing a home for his family, working early and late to achieve his end and deeming no sacrifice of his own comfort too great.

On January 4, 1904, he was married to Miss Kate Moyer, of this place. Six children were born to them, four boys and two girls, and all are living to mourn the loss of a father whose every effort was for them.

Mr. Barthel was a member of Elkader Lodge No. 72, A.F. & A.M., the M.W.A. and the Yeoman, having a total life insurance of $6,000, another evidence of his thoughtfulness and care for those dependent on him.

Funeral services were held at the Congregational church Friday afternoon, Rev. G.W. Baxter officiating. Prof. J.E. Webb, who was long associated with the deceased in school work, delivered an appreciation of his life work, his intimate acquaintance with him qualifying Mr. Webb to speak. The fraternal orders escorted the body of their friend and brother to the grave where the Masonic lodge with the impressive ceremony of their order rendered the last office for the dead.

Printed in the The Elkader Register, 11/02/1905 were Resolutions of Respect nearly identical to the one above, from the Elkader Homestead No. 269, B.A.Y. and by Mystic Camp No. 319, M.W.A. and this additional information:

The funeral of A.L. Barthel last Friday afternoon was largely attended, although the day was raw and chilly. The Masons, Yoemen and Modern Woodmen marched from the house to the Congregational church. Prof. J.E. Webb read an eulogistic paper on the character of the deceased and then Rev. G.W. Baxter delivered the sermon. At the cemetery the Masons performed the last sad rites by using their funeral service. Among those present were Messrs. John and Henry Barthel, of Elkhart, Ind., and Mrs. Alfred Kane, of Goshen, brothers and sisters of the deceased, and Miss Estella Moyer, of Milwaukee, sister of Mrs. Barthel.

Card of Thanks
I take this method to express the sincere thanks of my family and myself for the many kind acts extended to us during the sickness and burial of my beloved husband.
Mrs. A.L. Barthel
