John Charles Wahls, Jr.

Funeral services were held for John Charles Wahls, Jr., 68, Friday, July 30, 1993, at Peace United Church of Christ, Elkader. Rev. Lance A. Bentley and Rev. Ralph M. Chandler officiated the service with burial in East Side Cemetery, Elkader. Honorary pallbearers were Sylvester Wille, Louis Matt III, Gerald Reimer, Carlus Schuety, Carlys Best and Fred Stroschein. Pallbearers were Virgil Dennler, Robert Dennler, Dale Wahls, Dave Dennler, William White, Dale Dettman, Dave Wirkler and Marcus Baumgartner.

John Charles Wahls, Jr. was born July 24, 1925, on the family farm at St. Olaf. At 18 he traveled the U. S. with various jobs until 1946 when he entered the service as a paratrooper in the occupation Army of Japan. After the service he returned to northeast Iowa and began his own trucking firm and purchased a small farm. In 1951 John and Lois were married in Grinnell. They sold the trucking firm and the original farm to purchase the farm on Highway 56 west of Elkader where they raised their family. In spite of his devastating illness, he continued to operate the farm until his death. John Charles Walz [Wahls], Jr., died July 27, 1993, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Marshfield, Wis., of a protracted illness.

Survivors include his wife Lois Lorene (Koopman) Wahls; three children, Richard L. Wahls of Jacksonville, Ill., Denis D. Wahls of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Dr. Terry L. Wahls of Marshfield, Wis.; his grandchildren, Nathan, Naomi, Brittany and Zacharia; a brother Gordon Wahls of Villanova, Penn., and a sister, Virginia Wahls of Waterloo.

Preceding him in death were his parents John Charles Wahls, Sr. and Marie P. (Schmidt) Wahls and his infant daughter Mary Ellen Wahls.
