Mrs. Elizabeth Stickford

Died on Friday, March 14th, Mrs. Elizabeth Stickford, aged mother of C.G. and Wm. Stickford. The deceased was born in Osnabrueck, Hannover, Germany, June 14th, 1807. She was married to J.H.Stickford who survives her at the age of 91 years, July 25th, 1827, and for nearly 63 years was his constant companion. She left her native land in 1835, and landed at Baltimore where they lived for a short time, her husband working on the Baltimore & Ohio RR. From Baltimore they traveled overland to Pittsburg and from there to Cincinnati, where another short stay was made. Mr. Stickford then took up government land in Ripley Co. Indiana, about 40 miles from Cincinnati where they lived for 16 years. In 1853 they came to Clayton county and have lived here since.

Mrs. Stickford was a thorough Christian, not in the usual narrow sense in which that word is commonly used, but in that broad sense which considers the world its field, and mankind its brotherhood. She found the greatest joy in providing for her children, four of who survive her, and all of whom are now of mature years. At the home of C.G. Stickford, one of their sons, the aged couple spent the evening of their life, and there still remains the aged father who in his age dimmed faculties is living over again the scenes of his childhood and early manhood, and it will be but a short time before he will be called to again join her with home was for 63 years united.

Her funeral occurred on Monday, and her remains were buried at the new cemetery, followed by an immense throng of friends. Her eldest son Herman, of Rochester, Minn., was present to assist in the last sad rites. Peace be with her ashes.
