John Hiram Stickford
Death has summoned many of the older pioneers of Clayton county to their death beyond the tomb, lately. Their number is becoming fewer day by day. It will not be long, before the last of that sturdy band will find a resting place under the sod of this beloved county.
On Saturday John H. Stickford answered the final call, at the age of 91 years 7 months and 16 days. For the last 5 years Mr. Stickford was living over his long and eventful career, oblivious of the present, too feeble to leave his couch he waited with the patience of a true Christian the final summons, surrounded by loved ones who anticipated his every wish.
John H. Stickford was born in Drehle, Osnabrueck, Germany, April 14th, 1799. In 1828 he married Mrs. Maria Elis Wessling with whom he emigrated to this country in 1835, landing in Baltimore, where they remained a year. They then moved to Cincinnati, where they lived a year, moving from thence to a farm in Indiana. Here they remained 15 years, when in 1853 they came to Garnavillo, locating on the farm east of town where they have lived ever since. Five children, four sons and a daughter were born to them, of whom two sons, John H., and F. William, preceded them in death. Of those living Herman and the daughter, Mrs. C. H. Bierbaum resides in Minnesota. Christ. G. Occupies the old homestead, and it was with him that his declining years were spent. His remains were buried at the new cemetery on Tuesday, followed by a large number of sorrowing friends.
