Cedar Rapids- Bishop Francis J. Dunn, 67, of 510 First Ave. NW, died Friday afternoon of an apparent heart attack in downtown Cedar Rapids. He was auxiliary bishop of the Cedar Rapids region of the Archdiocese of Dubuque.

Dunn was born March 22, 1922, at Elkader. He graduated in 1944 from Loras College, Dubuque, and studied theology at Kendrick Seminary, St. Louis, MO. He was ordained to the priesthood in St. Raphael Cathedral, Dubuque, on Jan. 11, 1948, and served at Ames, Cascade and Dubuque before he was named assistant chancellor of the Archdiocese of Dubuque in 1956. From 1958 to 1960, Dunn attended graduate school at Angelicum University, Rome, where he received a degree in Canon Law.

After his return to Dubuque, he was appointed chancellor of the archdiocese, a post he held until 1983, and he served in several other capacities, including vicar general. He was chaplain at Mount Carmel Motherhouse from 1961 to 1969, and also served as director of Catholic cemeteries during that period.

Dunn was appointed auxiliary bishop in the summer of 1969, and served as pastor of St. Joseph's Church, Dubuque, from 1969 to 1976. Bishop Dunn was episcopal vicar for the Cedar Rapids region which covers three deaneries in 7 counties serving a Catholic population of 66,000 in 57 parishes.

Dunn was a committee member of Pro-Life Activities of the National Council of Catholic Bishops and an executive board member of the Boy Scouts of Northeastern Iowa. He served on the boards of two colleges, Divine Word College, Epworth, and North American College, Louvain, Belgium.

Survivors include his mother, Josephine Feeney Dunn of Dubuque; and a sister, Mary Conners of Madison, Wis.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, St. Raphael Cathedral, Dubuque. Burial: St. Joseph's Cemetery, Elkader.
