Asa Smith was born near Winchester, Ky., March 16th, 1833, and died March 13th, 1916, aged 82 years, 11 months and 27 days. He came to Iowa in the winter of 1857, and was married to Miss Sarah Amsden on April 3rd, 1859.
In the year of 1872 he moved onto the farm, which he occupied at the time of his death.
He leaves his wife and eight children: Mrs. Delia Harbaugh, R.F. Smith, Mrs. Mary Ridenour, A.C. Smith, Mrs. Edna Schnack, Mrs. Jennie Beddow, Mrs. Tillie Neiter and Mrs. Annie Flaherty; also thirty-eight grand-children, twenty-six great-grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Mathilda Noel, of Kentucky.

Important note: this is not the same Asa Smith who served in the 21st Iowa Infantry during the civil war. That Asa Smith moved from Clayton co. after the war and died in Pierce co., Washington in 1906 or early 1907.
