JAMES DANFORTH WHIPPLE
James Danforth Whipple was born October 28, 1850, in the state of New Hampshire. He came to Iowa in the early days of 1854 with his parents, and settled on Cox Creek, Clayton County, where his family lived until the Civil War, when his father went into service for his country, giving his life. After this time the mother reared her children and the family circle was unbroken for over fifty years.Mr. Whipple was united in marriage to Sada Smith, March 31, 1872 at Strawberry Point. To this union was born three children: Mrs. Belle Hilsenbeck, Greeley; Mrs. Laura Griffith, Greeley; C. W. Whipple, Cedar Rapids.
The first few years of their married life was spent on a farm and the past thirty six have been spent in Edgewood. For the past ten years Mr. Whipple has been landlord of Hotel Whipple.
After a lingering illness of six weeks, Mr. Whipple passed away Sunday, March 16, 1919. Those left to mourn his death are his many friends, his wife, three children, and three brothers, J. W. Whipple, Chicago, Ill., E. J. Whipple, Chester, and Darwin Whipple, Kansas City, Mo., also one sister Mrs. M. J. Carpenter, of Strawberry Point.
Funeral services were held in the M. E. church, Wednesday, March 19, at 1:30, Reverend Bretnal officiating. Burial was made in Edgewood cemetery.
