Mrs. Anna Berns, 86, of Garnavillo, mother of Mrs. Francis Bortscheller of Oyens and Mrs. Max Schnepf of Le Mars, died March 31, 1973, at her home in Garnavillo after an illness of a few months.
She was also the mother of Sister Marcella of Dubuque who formerly was associated for many years with the Sacred Heart Hospital in Le Mars.
Anna Hoeger, daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Hoeger, was born Sept. 27, 1886, at New Vienna and she had lived most of her life in the Garnavillo area.
She was preceded in death in 1941 by her husband Herman Berns.
Funeral services were held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Garnavillo April 2 with a concelebrated mass by Msgr. Ernest Ament, Father Irwin Matt and Father Dennis Koopman. Burial was in the church cemetery under direction of the Tuecke-Allenstein Funeral Home.
Mrs. Berns was the mother of 10 children and she was preceded in death by her three sons, Sylvester, Benedict and Cyril.
Surviving are her seven daughters, Sister Marcella of Dubuque; Mrs. Herbert (Mary) Koopman of Garnavillo; Mrs. Francis (Isabelle) Bortscheller, Oyens; Sister Rachel of Chicago; Mrs. Max (Teresa) Schnepf of Le Mars; Mrs. Jim (Ann) McTaggert of Dubuque and Eunice Berns of Garnavillo.
She is also survived by 30 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren and a brother, Edward Hoeger of Garnavillo.
