Duane Lewis Whitlock, 90, of Strawberry Point, died Tuesday, April 10, 2007, in the Strawberry Point Lutheran Home after a long illness. Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Roberson Funeral Home in Strawberry Point and one hour before services Saturday at the church.

Services of resurrection and life will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Emanuel Lutheran Church by the Rev. Jason Cooper and the Rev. Al Hock. Burial will be in Strawberry Point Cemetery.

Duane Lewis Whitlock celebrated his 90th birthday this January. He was born to Duane and Martha Whitlock, Beloit, Wis.

After spending his formative years in Strawberry Point, Iowa, he embarked on a worldwide naval career that spanned the next 32 years. His final posting was as deputy director of the Naval Security Group. He had total responsibility for distribution of naval intelligence related to electronic communications of governments opposed to the United States.

His loving wife of 12 years, Evelyn Elliot, survives Duane. Additionally his children and spouses include Nadine and Walter Nowosad of Carson City, Nev., Duane and Kim Whitlock of Clements, Md., and Kathleen and the late Michael Shuey of Saint Helena, Calif. Grandchildren include Walter Nowosad Jr., Natalie Thoryk, Lewis Nowosad, Derek and Jessica Whitlock, and Kempton and Adam Shuey. His great-grandchildren are Nicholas Thoryk, Megan and Lisa Nowosad and Gavin Shuey.

His wife of 50 years, Gertrude, as well as his siblings, Sidney, Eugene and Gladys, predeceased him.

His hobbies included fishing and traveling, but most importantly, writing. His books, "Critical Thoughts and Notions" and "The Search for Intelligent Design" were devoted to his research in particle physics. His travels took him around the world but most poignant was his visit to Oberammergau, Germany, with his wife Evelyn, where he saw the Passion Play. After returning home he was baptized in the Lutheran faith.

Later in his life he returned from California to Strawberry Point with his wife, Evelyn Elliot. He became active in his community by joining the Lions Club, supporting the Strawberry Point Lutheran Home and contributing to many other worthwhile projects.

Duane had requested that no flowers be sent. Instead, a memorial gift to the Strawberry Point Lutheran Home at 313 Elkader St., in his name, would be appreciated.
