Elkader-- Thomas Garaghty, 72, a retired farmer, was instantly killed Wednesday night when he fell down the basement stairway at his home here. He suffered a broken neck.
The accident happened about 10 p.m. when Mr. Garaghty started for the basement to bank the furnace fire. He lost his footing on the first step, plunged down the stairway and struck a post at the base.
Mr. Garaghty had farmed 10 miles southwest of Elkader until 15 years ago, when he retired and moved into town. He is survived by his wife: two daughters, Mrs. Ray Troester, Elkader, and Mrs. Milo Doser, St. Anthony; a brother, M. J. Garaghty, Elkader, and three siaters, Mrs. Catherine Connell, Elkader and Mame Garaghty and Mrs. Elizabeth Bannon, both of Waterloo.
The body is at Oelke funeral home. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
