Rites for Flier to be Monday - Ex-Elkader Youth Killed Over Berlin in 1944
Elkader, Ia. - Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Dittmer of Davenport, formerly of Elkader, have recived word from the army that the body of their son, T-Sgt Robert L. Dittmer, will arrive Saturday at Davenport for final rites and burial.
St. Dittmer was killed in action over Berlin, Germany, Oct. 6, 1944. He was a radio technician and gunner on a B-17 at the time.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday from the Brown funeral home at Davenport and burial will be in the Davenport cemetery.
Sgt. Dittmer was born Aug. 24, 1923, at Elkader. He received his education in the Elkader public schools and was graduated with the class of 1941. He entered Elkader junior college and was in his second year there when he reported for induction Jan. 7, 1943. He was trained as a radio technician and gunner. He left the United States on May 26, 1944, and entered combat after training in Scotland and Ireland.
He was awarded the Air Medal and a citation for bravery. He was on his 16th mission at the time of his death. The Purple Heart was presented to his parents at Davenport after his death.
Sgt. Dittmer is survived by his parents, a sister, Mrs. Robert Brandenberg, of Fond du Lac, Wis.; his grandmother, Mrs. Katheryn Dittmer, of Elkader, and an uncle, L.D. Dittmer, of Elkader.
