DENT, MINGER

Elkader Argus, Wed., 4 Nov. 1903

Charlie Dent, the 17 year old son of Mrs. Augusta Dent Minger, of Millville township, was found dead in a brush pile Sunday evening at 8 o'clock.

Charlie started out hunting with his dog Sunday morning and as he was gone so long the folks supposed he had gone to Buena Vista so never paid much attention. When he did not return at six o'clock his step-father, Henry Minger, became alarmed and started in search of him and found him at the hour above mentioned, about one mile from his home, the dog still near him. He was lying on a brush pile and the double barreled shot gun lying stock down with one hammer still up, near him. It is supposed that he was trying to chase a rabbit out with the stock of the gun.

This should teach all young boys a lesson. The funeral was held at Guttenberg Wednesday; interment in the city cemetery. He leaves to mourn his untimely death a mother, step-father, two brothers, one sister, one half-brother and a host of friends. He was a bright, cheerful lad and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Elgin Echo, Thur., 12 Nov. 1903

Charley Dent, of Guttenberg, met with a fatal accident while out hunting a week ago Sunday. The young man and a dog started out to shoot rabbits on that day. Not returning at dinner time the family felt no uneasiness, but when his stay continued until dark a searching party was organized and started out, but had only gone a short distance when the dog came up to them. The animal led the way to where its master was found a corpse. The body was discovered on a brush pile and it was supposed that when the fatal accident occurred he was trying to frighten rabbits from beneath the pile, with the gun in his hand. It is supposed a twig caught the hammer causing the discharge. The load from the gun entered underneath his chin, passing upward, and no doubt death was instantaneous. The accident is much deplored as he was a young man about 17 years old and highly esteemed in the community in which he lived.
