Deceased Name: VERNA C. HABELVerna C. Habel, 72, of 2664 Marywood Drive, died peacefully following a long illness, Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Ghost Catholic Church. Entombment will be in Resurrection Garden Mausoleum at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Siegert-Didesch Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview Ave., where there will be a scripture wake service at 7 p.m.
She was born on Aug. 10, 1927, in North Buena Vista, Iowa, daughter of Joseph and Catherine (Cook) Hefel.
She married Leon Habel on Jan. 19, 1944, in North Buena Vista. They farmed in the Balltown area for 12 years before moving to Dubuque in 1957. Mr. Habel died in 1990.
She was a member of Holy Ghost Parish and the Catholic Knights Branch 705. She was a foster mother who loved spending time with her family and enjoyed hockey and crafts.Surviving are a daughter, Sandy (Ken) Gaber, of Dubuque; a son, Tim (Diann) Habel, of Dubuque; two brothers, Joseph (Margaret) Hefel, of North Buena Vista, and Martin (Pat) Hefel, of Guttenberg, Iowa; five grandchildren, Jeffrey (Gloria) Gaber, Torey (Debra) Gaber, Kimberly Habel, Trenda (Rick) Gravel and Amanda Habel; and five great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by her parents; five sisters; and three brothers.
