Elgin Echo, Thur., 5 Feb. 1903.

Wm. Patterson of Wagner township passed to the great beyond Sunday afternoon, February 1, 1903. Mr. Patterson had been in feeble health for some time and his death though looked for was unexpected at this time. He was an old settler of that community having lived on the farm where he died since the early 50's being engaged in the occupation of farming and stock raising. The deceased is the first of a family of ten grown children, three girls and seven boys, to pass away. The funeral was held from his late home Wednesday morning and interment made in the cemetery on the home farm. Besides the immediate relatives a large number of friends are left to mourn the loss of this truly good man.

Elgin Echo, Thur., 12 Feb. 1903.

William S. Patterson was born in Wyandot Co., Ohio, Dec. 18, 1826, and died at his home in Clayton Co., Iowa, Feb. 1, 1903, aged 76 years, one month and 13 days. He was married to Susannah Killinger of Wyandot Co., Ohio, March 6, 1845. Twelve children were born to them, only five of whom survive, Rosalia Connor of Platte, S.D.; Sarah Ann Cooley of Elgin, Iowa; Australia Shumaker of Canton, China; Josephine Wonser of Tama, Iowa; and William L. Patterson of Clayton county.

The deceased was one of the early settlers of Iowa coming from Ohio in 1847, he spent one year in Jackson Co., then moved to Clayton Co. in 1848 remaining on the same farm the remainder of his days. While yet a boy he became a christian and joined the Methodist church but years afterward joined the United Brethren church as it was the only organized in the community. His home was always a home for ministers of the gospel and he was ever ready to help in any good work.

Mr. Patterson has been an invalid for over ten years but is now at rest and has gone to his reward.

The funeral was held at his late home Feb. 4, 1903, Rev. Baxter of the Congregational church of Elkader officiating. The burial took place in the Patterson cemetery.
