In 1983, Ken received his B.A. degree from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. He continued his education, attending St. Cloud State University, St. Cloud, Minn., graduating with a master's degree in 1998.

Ken was united in marriage to Sheri Groth on June 4, 1983, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Elkader, Iowa.
