Elgin Echo, Thursday, 10 December 1908.

A week ago Saturday a fatal accident happened near Elkader. Hugh Rice and Mac and Elmer McLaughlin were hunting rabbits, when Rice, aged about 13, accidentally shot Elmer McLaughlin, aged about 10 years, through the body from the effects of which the boy died at 1:30 o'clock the following Sunday. Rice had the gun and Mac McLaughlin was tramping a brush pile. A rabbit started and ran towards Elmer McLaughlin, who was a short distance away. Rice fired and the ball went wide of its mark, going through Elmer's body with the above result.
