Elgin Echo, Thursday, 17 March 1898. From the Guttenberg Press, undated.
On Thursday last Lorenz Schlueder, accompanied by his wife, started for Elkader, and as the sleighing was not very good they only took the front bob and attached a seat to it. In crossing over a deep water break the bob tipped forward, Mrs. Schlueder falling off sideways and Mr. Schlueder was thrown forward on the horses heels, this frightened the team and they started to run. Mr. Schlueder in some manner got caught and his head was badly bruised, several bones were broken by being kicked by the horses. He lived only about four hours after the accident. Coroner Scholz was notified and went out and held an inquest and a verdict of accidental death was rendered. Mr. Schlueder came to this country about twelve years ago and was 72 years old at the time of his death. He leaves a wife, one son and two daughters besides a large circle of friends to mourn the loss of a kind husband and father and good neighbor.
