Elgin Echo, Thursday, 31 March 1898.

Cyrus Gibbs was drowned in the Turkey River, at Turkey River Junction, 4 miles south of Guttenberg, the 14th inst. He with three friends were returning from a trip across the river and Mr. Gibbs was left to take the boat to its right place. He did not join his companions very quickly and they went to see what was detaining him and when they returned to the boat they found Mr. Gibbs drowned. The boat must have lurched and he lost his balance but in following he was caught on a nail and was unable to release himself.
