Elgin Echo, Thursday, 28 July 1898.

All Elkport was startled July 10 by the report that Heme Hill was missing and upon a close search he was found in Kafer's corn field, where he had committed suicide by putting the muzzle of the gun in his mouth and blowing the top of his head off.
