Batchelder, Susan 'Susie' 1863-1917

BATCHELDER, BACHELDER

The next morning after Christmas the house owned and occupied by Miss Susan Bachelder (sic) of Hardin was discovered to be on fire by Lloyd Pearson. This was about six o'clock in the morning and he hastily called the neighbors by telephone. The house was securely locked and the boys gained admission by breaking a window and found the dead body of Miss Bachelder.

For a good many years she taught country school in this locality and had many friends. Since the death of her parents she has lived alone and it is thought her mind was somewhat unbalanced. She was dressed when found and her bank certificates were found sewed in her clothing. The body was taken to an undertaking parlor in Monona and Saturday the funeral was held in the Hardin church, burial at Watson. Rev. Williams of this city preaching the funeral sermon.

----- ----- -----

Susan Bachelder (sic), a maiden lady living alone at her home in Hardin, two miles north of Luana, met a tragic death Wednesday last, when her house caught fire and burned. The neighbors hurried to the scene at first sight of the blaze, but the interior of the place was a mass of flames. Going to the bedroom window they discovered the lady in bed, and breaking the window rescued her with difficulty, but life was extinct when she was taken out and the body badly charred and burned. She was brought to the Schultz undertaking rooms and later buried in the Watson cemetery. Her only near relatives live in the east, and it is understood communication has been received from them. She leaves considerable property disposed of through a will.

~Elgin Echo, Jan 10, 1918 (as reprinted from the Monona Leader)

Note: the family - Susie, her parents & siblings are buried in Council Hill cemetery near Watson. Surname spelling on gravestone is Batchelder, and her dates: 07/01/1863-12/26/1917.
