Elkader, Ia. - Joyce Ann Hill, 2 1/2-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Hill, was killed by a hit and run driver while playing with her brother, Ronald, 4, near the entrance to the fair grounds Friday evening about 7 o'clock.
County Coroner Dan Lowe, who found that the girl was killed by a motor vehicle whose driver was not known, said that Ronald was the only witness to the tragedy. County Sheriff E.W. Carlsen, who with County Attorney H.K. Roggensack is investigating the case, said a clue to the identity of the driver was uncovered Saturday morning and that developments may be expected soon.
The girl and her brother were playing near the entrance to the fair grounds, near their home, according to Sheriff Carlsen, when a car, coming from within the fair grounds enclosure, struck the girl. She suffered a broken neck. The sheriff said her brother tried to drag her from the road, and, unable to, ran to the home of a neighbor, Mrs. Elsie Portwine, who carried the child to the parents' home where a doctor pronounced her dead.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the McTaggert-Haudensheld Funeral Home to the Congregational Church. The Rev. George R. Richter, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the East Side Cemetery, Elkader.
Surviving are her parents; her brother, Ronald, and her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Holden, Elgin, Ia. and Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Hill, Elkader.
