Elgin Echo, Thur., 27 Sept. 1917.

Nels Ellingson, employed as a farm hand east of Clermont, was gored to death Monday evening by a bull on the farm of his employer, E. O. Lien. He was dead when found, and evidently had met death quickly after going to the pasture into which the bull had escaped.

Mr. Ellingson was well known in and near Clermont, having been a farm hand in the Clermont and Postville vicinities for 25 or 30 years. He was 58 years of age and a bachelor.

The affair happened about 5 o'clock Monday evening. The bull belonging to Mr. Lien had broken down a barn door and escaped to the pasture. Mr. Ellingson as a part of his work had gone out to bring the animal back. When he did not return soon others went in search for him and found his lifeless body. His chest was crushed and his leg broken. By those knowing the habits of angry bulls it is believed that the first thing the animal would do to the man would be to gore him, hence it is thought that Mr. Ellingson was killed in the first attack, and subsequently mangled.

Mr. Ellingson has no near relatives in the Clermont vicinity. A brother lives in New York, and a cousin between Postville and Waukon. The Lien farm is six miles east of Clermont in Clayton county.- Argo-Gazette.

Note: Though the age at death does not match the date of death matches that of a Nils Ellingson 3-31-1853 / 9-24-1917 who is buried in the East Clermont Lutheran cemetery in Clayton county. The IGPP shows a photo of this stone.

Submitter is not related.
