Elgin Echo, Thursday, 08 August 1912.

After an illness wherein various doctors and treatments had been tried without the desired result, Mrs. Knudt Groth, who was about fifty years of age, became despondent because of ill health, and this is thought preyed on her mind until she became temporarily insane and on Sunday morning took her own life.

Mr. Groth arose at the usual time Sunday morning and thinking that his wife wished to rest longer went to the barn to do the chores. The hired girl helped him with the milking and returned to the house while Mr. Groth fed the hogs and cared for the stock. When the girl returned to the house Mrs. Groth was up and about and seemed to be in her ordinary frame of mind. When Mr. Groth came to the house he inquired if his wife had arisen and being informed that she had been about the house only a few minutes before he called her, but receiving no reply, instituted a search of the house and not finding her in the building he searched the outside buildings. When he opened the door to the machine shed he was startled to see the body of his wife suspended by a rope which had been tied to a rafter. He immediately cut the rope and did all he could to restore consciousness but life was extinct. The coroner was called and a jury impanneled and the evidence given revealed substantially the above facts.

Mrs. Groth was a woman well liked by all that knew her, her home was a happy one and despondency, caused by ill health is the only cause which can be ascribed for her rash act.

The funeral was held Wednesday and interment made in the Gunder cemetery.
