Elgin Echo, Thursday, 12 June 1902.

Thursday May 20, Mrs. Sophia Behm, of Guttenberg, aged 83 years, was washing out a soap kettle in the yard, underneath which she had previously built a fire for the purpose of heating water to wash the kettle with, her clothing caught fire, and being unable to extinguish the flames ran as best she could to a neighbors who assisted in getting off the burning clothing, but before they succeeded the flesh on the old lady's limbs was burned nearly to a crisp. A physician was summoned and everything possible was done to lessen suffering, but on account of serious burns no hopes could be entertained for her recovery. Death came to relieve the sufferer of the extreme pain Monday morning at four o'clock.
