Dorothy Meyer was born August 7, 1934, in Clayton, Iowa, the daughter of Ewald and Myrtle (Brown) Meyer. She was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church on September 9, 1934, and confirmed at Evangelical Lutheran Church of Peace on August 21, 1960. Dorothy attended country school and completed the eighth grade.
On July 14, 1951, she married James Spiker, and they had six children: Janice, Beverly, James, Lavern, David, and Wesley. Dorothy also raised a foster daughter, Suzy Rodgers, for several years. On June 19, 1973, James died. On June 22, 1976, Dorothy married Roy Christopher. He, too, preceded her in death on August 16, 1994.
Dorothy lived all of her life in Clayton and Garnavillo, Iowa. She enjoyed doing embroidery when she could find the time in her busy schedule. In addition to raising her children, she worked for twenty years at the Lite House in Clayton. She retired in 1994, when the cancer she had fought for 10 years made her too ill to work. Dorothy passed away Thursday, December 5, 1996, following a long illness.
Dorothy is survived by her children and their spouses: Janice Krugger, Beverly (Joe) Wirkler, James (Vicki) Spiker, Lavern (Mary) Spiker, David Spiker, Wesley Spiker, and Suzy Rodgers; thirteen grandchildren; seven siblings: Janie McMahon, Donna Southwick, Robert Meyer, Leon Meyer, Allen Meyer, DiAnne Wynne, and Jeannie Rhodes; and her mother, Myrtle Fields.
