Vern William Wirkler was born on the farm immediately west of Garnavillo, on May 20, 1920, the son of Harvey Peter and Louise Anna Dickman Wirkler. Upon graduation from Garnavillo High School, he was engaged in farming with his father. He was a faithful member of the Garnavillo Gospel Hall.

On May 20, 1948 he was united in marriage with Jeanne Kregel at her parents home west of Garnavillo. Seven sons were born to this union. They continued to farm the home farm until the spring of 1978, when they moved to the Walter Wirkler farm, where early on the morning of March 9, 1989 he suffered a coronary attack and was taken to Central Community Hospital in Elkader, where he was pronounced dead.

Vern is survived by his wife, Jeanne; sons David of Garnavillo, Robert of Postville, Paul, John, Joe, and Don all of Garnavillo; three grandchildren, Kristy, Ryan, and Steven; and one brother, Harvey, of Farmersburg. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Richard, in 1969.
