William Becker, 73, of Rowan street, was killed outright shortly after 11 o'clock Friday morning when he fell from the roof of a barn on the Alfed Saunders farm, about a mile west of Rockdale. Dr. F.S. Leonard, Dubuque county coroner, said that death was caused by a skull fracture.
Becker had been shingling the roof of the barn with two other men when he lost his footing and fell a distance of about 20 feet. His face struck a rock, crushing the front part of the skull. The two men working with him at the time said they did not see him until he landed on the ground below. The barn was being re-constructed and there were a large number of rocks scattered about. The body was removed later to the Hoffmann mortuary.
Mr. Becker, a native of McGregor, Ia., had lived in Dubuque for 45 years. Survivors are one brother, Frederick Becker, and four sisters, Mrs. Sophia Coffman, Mrs. Albert Schultz, Mrs. John Heilman, and Miss Augusta Becker, all of McGregor. Several nieces reside in Dubuque.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
