FUNERAL OF JOHN O'BRIEN TUESDAY

Funeral services for John J. O'Brien, well-known Cox Creek farmer, and for
many years a director of the Farmers' State Bank here, were held Tuesday
morning at 10 o'clock from the home to the Sacred Heart church at Cox Creek
and solemn requiem mass read by Rev. P.J. Boyle, pastor, with Revs. McMahon of Hampton, Cregan of Volga and Bowen of Dubuque assisting. Burial was made in the Cox Creek Catholic cemetery.

Mr. O'Brien, who was 62 years old, died early Sunday morning at Mercy hospital at Oelwein where he was taken Friday after he was injured in a runaway accident. He was coming down the steep, rocky hill near his farm, driving a team, one of which was a young horse that became frightened at some quail crossing the road and bolted, throwing Mr. O'Brien out and tangling him in the lines. He was evidently dragged for considerable distance before the line tore loose. When the team reached the barn, the members of the O'Brien family, realized something had happened to the driver, starting out to search for him and found his badly mangled body lying along the roadside. He was taken to his home and later to the hospital where it was found he had suffered fractures to his legs, hips, shoulders, head and arms, and serious internal injuries that caused his death.

Mr. O'Brien was one of the best-known and best-loved farmers in the Cox Creek neighborhood, where he had resided all of his life. He was married to Miss Rose Henry, who survives him with one daughter, Mary Grace, one son, John M., and two sisters, Mrs. A.J. Thyne of Strawberry Point and Miss Nellie O'Brien of Oelwein. He was a devout Catholic and was a trustee of the Cox Creek Catholic church at the time of his death.

A large number of Volga people attended the funeral services, among them being H.A. Dohrer, Thomas Duff, G.A. Leete, Frank Leahy, E.C. Becker, L.L. Linder, Leonard Quinn, Emmett Thyne, Rev. D.P. Cregan and Thomas Curran.

The pallbearers were Ed Berns, John McDermott, Thomas Duff, Martin Stence,
William Burns and Arthur Dittman.
