Funeral Services For George O'Brien Age 50, Sperry Township Farmer Were Held Saturday At St. Joseph's Church In Elkader At 10:30 A.M. Burial Was In The Cox Creek Cemetery.
George O`Brien Was Killed Shortly After 7 P.M. Last Wednesday Evening, Feb 9 1955, In An Auto Collision On Highway 13 North Of Strawberry Point. He Had Been On His Way To Strawberry Point When, On A Curve Near The Top Of Dittmer Hill He Met A Car Driven By Fredrick Mast, A Waterloo Architect. The Pavement On The Curve Was Reported Snow Packed And Slippery. The Cars Collided With The Waterloo Car Ending Up In A Roadside Ditch. Following The Crash, O'Brien Was Found Sitting In His Car Dead. Mast Suffered Fractured Ribs. G.P.Olson, Waterloo Contractor Who Was Riding With Mast, Suffered A Fractured Hip. Both Were Taken To A Manchester Hospital.
O'Brien's Body Was Taken To The McTaggart Funeral Home In Elkader Wednesday Night Where An Autopsy Was Performed Thursday Afternoon. Sheriff Forrest Fischer Said That O'Brien's Personal Physician Had Asked That A Post Mortem Be Held To Determine Whether Or Not O'Brien Might Have Died Of A Heart Attack Just Before The Crash. Dr.Thorson, Of Dubuque, IA. Performed The Autopsy And Reported That The Collision Had Been Responsible For O'Brien's Death. Coroner Clifford Pilkington Then Issued A Verdict Of Accidental Death.
O'Brien Was Born On A Sperry Township Farm On August 19, 1904, and Was The Son Of James & Mary O'Brien. He Never Married And Was Living With His Mother On The Home Farm At The Time Of His Death. His Father Died About 26 Years Ago. Besides His Mother, He Is Survived By One Brother, Frank, Of Elkader & 3 Sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Scully, Sr. Jerome Of Mason City And Mrs. Ellen Cahill Of Chicago.
