Charlotte Marie O'Brien, 88, of Strawberry Point, died Saturday, February 19, 2000, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home, following a recent illness.

Charlotte was born on August 18, 1911 to Francis Joseph Amling, Sr. and Anna Louise Seibert Amling in Elkport, Iowa. After graduating from Elkport High School, Charlotte attended the University of Iowa and received a 'Certificate of Graduate Nurse' in June of 1932. After graduation she did private duty in Clayton County for a short time. Following that she was a Charge Nurse at the IOOF Hospital in Mason City, Iowa for a year. From 1934 to 1938 she served as a Staff Nurse on the Medical and Surgical floors at the University Hospitals in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Early in 1938 Charlotte returned to Iowa to marry Marcus Henry O'Brien on February 12, 1938 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Strawberry Point. She joined Marcus on the O'Brien Family farm in Cox Creek where four sons and a daughter were born to them. She enjoyed reading poetry, working in her flower and vegetable gardens, and arranging flowers for her house. Charlotte was a strong advocate of higher education and was very proud of the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include four sons: Michael (Arline) O'Brien of Waikoloa, Hawai'i; James (Joyce) O'Brien of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Charles O'Brien of Mesa, Arizona; Kenneth (Theresa) of Clinton, Iowa, and one daughter: Margaret (Jerry) Drucker of Strawberry Point; and six grandsons; Sean O'Brien of Burlington, Vermont; Todd O'Brien of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Timothy O'Brien of Clinton, Iowa; Travis Drucker of Ames, Iowa; Matthew Drucker of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Jason Drucker of Strawberry Point; two granddaughters; Julianna O'Brien of Chicago, Illinois and Cate O'Brien of Clinton, Iowa.

Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and six brothers and sisters, Francis Jr., Anna, Alice, Minnie, John and Louis.

Several generations of Strawberry Point area residents will remember Charlotte fondly as the Office Nurse for Dr. H. M. Andersen, MD. where she served the community from 1957 to 1977 when she retired to enjoy her home, garden and grandchildren. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, an active member of OLCC, and a co-founder of the Victory Club during W.W.II. From June 1996 through January 2000 Charlotte resided at Silver Pines in Cedar Rapids.

A Liturgy to celebrate the life of Charlotte Marie O'Brien was held on February 23, 2000 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Strawberry Point at 10:30 AM. The Reverend Jack Paisley officiated. Burial was in the Cass Township Cemetery in Strawberry Point.

A Memorial Fund has been established in Charlotte's name.

Arrangements by Roberson Funeral Home in Strawberry Point.
