Edward Montour:
Edward Montour was born November 25, 1850 in New York state. He came to Clayton County with his parents when a boy. July 15, 1878 he was united in marriage to Katherine Probst with whom he shared the joy of life for forty-three years. At that time they located on a farm six miles southwest of Monona which has been their home ever since.
Mr. and Mrs. Montour were blessed with six children, three sons and daughters. Sorrow came to them when death claimed one of the daughters in infancy. Perhaps the greatest sorrow of his life came to him when his life companion passed away two years ago in the month of October. He lived a quiet unassuming life, was trusted and respected by friend and neighbor.
He took sick two years ago the day after his wife’s funeral, since which time he had not been in good health; but was quite ill at times. He was very sick last winter and was not expected to live, but the Lord permitted him to live through another beautiful summer. He took seriously ill about a week before his death when he suffered another stroke. His son and daughters with whom he lived did what loving hands could do to tke care of him in his illness. He passed away last Friday morning at 1 o’clock, October 5th, 1923, at the home where he had lived over 40 years, having attained the age of 72 years, 10 months and 1? days.
He leaves to mourn his departure 2 sons, Edward, south of Monona and Leslie at home; three daughters Mrs. Arthur Suddendorf, southwest of Monona, Blanche and Ellen at home. One brother Ben Montour, of Des Moines; one sister Anna Montour of Parker SD and six grandchildren besides other relatives and friends.
Services were held Monday afternoon at the house at 1:00 and at 2 in the Evangelical Church, conducted by Rev. Hillman. Burial in the city cemetery.
[Edward was the son of Peter and Mary Montour.]
