George Wagner Services Held:
Funeral services for George Albert Wagner, 85, were held last Saturday afternoon at 1:45 o’clock from the house to St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran church, at 2 o’clock with Rev. R. C. Schlueter officiating.
Burial was in the City cemetery.
Mr. Wagner died Thursday morning, May 1 at 7 o’clock. He had been ailing for some time with a heart ailment, being in a more serious condition the last five weeks.
He was born the son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Wagner at Weissenstadt, Germany, Dec. 27, 1861. He attended the parochial school in Germany. He came to the United States in 1884, working in the vicinity of Postville for the Fred Williams family for a number of years.
He was married to Carolina Nise, March 31, 1887, the couple living on a farm near Postville, for 10 years. Later they moved on the farm now owned by John Engelhardt, south of Monona. Several years later he purchased a large farm southwest of Monona, where he lived until retiring to Monona.
Mrs. Wagner died in 1934. Shortly after her death, he moved with his daughter, Katherine, to Monona, purchasing a home in 1935, living there the remainder of his life.
He was a member of St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran and of the Brotherhood.
He is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Monroe (Louise) Henkes of Farmersburg; Katherine, at home; Mrs. Ed (Sophia) Montour, both of Monona; Mrs. William (Johannah) Johanningmeier of McGregor; and Mrs. Edward (Mary) Huckstadt of Elkader; two sons, George of Monona, and Louis of Luana; a brother and sister living in Germany; 26 grandchildren, four grandsons of which served in the armed forces during World War II; and 21 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one grandchild, Mrs. Virgil Scheffert, Oct. 5, 1946,, and a son-in-law, Monroe Henkes, July 18, 1938.
Music for the services was provided by a quartet, composed of mrs. Lydia Pufahl, Mrs. R.C. Schlueter, A.P. Branae, and Gene Ferguson. Mrs. George Heins was the organist.
Pallbearers were: Lavern Huckstadt, Wylo Wagner, Lloyd and Carl Johanningmeier, Donald and Harvey Montour, and Alton and Vernis Henkes.
